GENERAL RULES FOR KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS
1. COMPETITIONS
1.1 Knockout competitions shall be organised and controlled by the Competition Secretary to run through the season. They shall
consist of the following:
1.2 Closing date for competition entries, 28th February Entry fees shall be agreed at A.G.M.
1.3 All competitions shall be played in accordance with World Bowls Laws (Bowls England) except for any variation of rules imposed
by this Association
1.4 Dress code for players & markers is: - White above, Grey below (trousers &Skirts) plus regulation bowling foot ware.
1.5 “Competitions will only take place if a minimum of 8 entries have been received.
2. ELIGIBILITY
2.1 The competitions shall be confined to Members of Clubs who are paid up members of The Humberside Sports Association
N.B. Where any player(s) enter a competition with the certain knowledge that he or she may be unable to play on the fixed date finals, that player(s) will forfeit any right to participate in the ensuing years competitions
3. PERIOD OF ROUNDS
3.1 The dates by which the various rounds of all competitions must be played will be fixed at the draw and these dates will be
strictly enforced. A match can be played before the start date of the next round but only if agreed by both Challenger and Opponent.
4. CHALLENGERS AND THEIR OPPONENTS AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES
4.1 The first drawn name of each pair shall be termed the Challenger and the second the Opponent.
4.2 The Challenger shall offer to his/her opponent three dates, no date to be earlier than 48 hours from the date of the offer and at
least two different weeks to be covered on the dates offered. The dates offered can include no more than two weekend dates. Where an opponent is in full time employment at least one weekend date should be offered if at all possible. These dates shall not include the last day of the round but this date can be used if agreed by both competitors. The Opponent shall reply accepting one of these dates within 48 hours of being offered.
4.3 Players failing to comply with 4.2 shall be scratched upon the successful application of the other player, and failing such an
application before the last day of the period of the round, both players shall be scratched.
4.4 No alteration of an accepted date shall be made unless mutually agreed; failing such an agreement the player desiring such
alteration must give the other player a ‘walkover’.
4.5 Score cards must clearly state the names of all players taking part. They should be signed by a member of the losing side and
returned by the winner to reach the Competition Secretary within 48 hours of the closing date of the appropriate round.
4.6 If a player scratches to give a walkover to his opponent this information must be sent to the Competition Secretary by the
surviving player and the match claimed as in 4.5 above.
4.7 All players involved shall be eliminated from the competition if the above procedures are not followed.
5. VENUE OF TIES
5.1 The ties of all the rounds except the Finals shall be played on the green of the Challenger.
6. QUESTIONS AND DISPUTES
6.1 The player entered, i.e. the named player, cannot take any further part in the competition once they have been scratched.
Partners or other unnamed players can take part if they have not played a match.
6.2 All questions and disputes must initially be raised in writing with the Competition
Secretary no later than the last day of the appropriate round If he/she cannot immediately resolve the problem it will be submitted to the Executive Committee. The decision of this Committee shall be final and binding. All questions and disputes referring to matches played on Finals Day must be made in writing to the Competition Secretary within 48 hours of that day.
7. FINALS DAY
7.1 All finals shall be played on the same day on the second Sunday in August and at a venue agreed at the A.G.M. Any Player(s) not
attending their final on the agreed day and time will be excluded from the following year’s competitions at the Executive Committees discretion.
7.2 The matches will be under the control of the Competition Secretary in conjunction with the Officers of the Host Club.
7.3 Attire for all finalists and markers will be grey bottoms, white tops, white waterproofs and regulation footwear.
7.4 Trophies shall be provided by the Association. Winners shall give satisfactory security to the Association for their safe custody
during the period of their possession. All trophies, must be returned clean, polished and in good condition to the Competition/General Secretary at the beginning of August.
8. COMPETITI0N PLAYING RULES
8.1 Ladies Singles
8.1.1 This competition is open to lady members of the Association.
8.1.2 The winner in each game shall be the first player to score 21 shots.
8.1.3 Four bowls each player, played alternately.
8.2 Open Singles
8.2.1 This competition is open to all members of the Association
8.2.2 The winner in each game shall be the first player to score 21 shots.
8.2.3 Four bowls each player, played alternatively.
8.3 Closed Singles
8.3.1 Open to all members of the Association except previous winners of the Open/Closed Singles.
8.3.2 The winner in each game shall be the first player to reach 21 shots.
8.3.3 Four bowls each player, played alternatively
8.4 Pairs
8.4.1 The game shall consist of 21 ends, four bowls each player. In the event of a tie an extra end must be played, the points of this
end to count in the final score.
8.4.2 Each pair shall consist of two players, who must be playing members of the same club.
8.4.3 The two players taking part in the first game shall constitute the ‘pair’ and should normally play together throughout the
competition. Only one additional player may be used as a substitute at any time and this named player can be the only substitute used (provided he/she has not already played in the same competition.) (See rule 6.1).
8.5 Mixed Pairs
8.5.1 The game shall consist of 21 ends, four bowls each player. In the event of a tie an extra end must be played, the points of this
end to count in the final score.
8.5.2 Each pair shall consist of two players who must be playing Members of the same Club.
8.5.3 The two players taking part in the first game shall constitute the ‘pair’ and should normally play together throughout the
competition. Only one additional player may be used as a substitute at any time and this named player can be the only substitute used (provided he/she has not already played in the same competition.) (See rule 6.1)
8.6 Triples
8.6.1 The game shall consist of 18 ends, three bowls each player. In the event of a tie an extra end must be played, the points of
this end to count in the final score.
8.6.2 Each triple shall consist of three players – who must be playing members of the same Club.
8.6.3 The three players taking part in the first game shall constitute the Triple and should normally play together throughout the
competition. Only one additional player may be used as a substitute at any time and this named player can be the only substitute used (provided he/she has not already played in the same competition.) (See rule 6.1).
8.7 Fours
8.7.1 The game shall consist of 21 ends, two bowls each player. In the event of a tie and extra end must be played, the points on
this end to count in the final score.
8.7.2 Each four shall consist of four players – who must be playing members of the same Club.
8.7.3 The four players taking part in the first game shall constitute the four and should normally play together throughout the
competition. Only one additional player may be used as a substitute at any time and this named player can be the only substitute used(provided he/she has not already played in the same competition.)( See rule 6.1).
8.8 Australian Pairs
8.8.1 The game shall consist of16 ends, four bowls each player. In the event ofa tie an extra end must be played, the points of
this end to count in the final score.
8.8.2 Each pair shall consist of two players who must be playing Members of the same Club.
8.8.3 The two players taking part in the first game shall constitute the ‘pair’ and should normally play together throughout the
competition. Only one additional player may be used as a substitute at any time and this named player can be the only substitute used (provided he/she has not already played in the same competition.) (See rule 6.1)
8.8.4 No player acting as a substitute shall be allowed to skip in any of the competitions (With the exception of the Australian
Pairs where both players lead and skip on alternate ends).
8.8.5 Australian Pairs How It Is Played
8.8.5.1 Australian Pairs allows both players on a team to play lead and skip.
8.8.5.2 Player A will throw the jack and then alternating with player A of the opposing team will bowl two of his four
bowls then players A and B will swop ends.
8.8.5.3 Player B will then bowl his four bowls alternating with player B of the opposing team, Players A and B will swop
ends again and player A will bowl his last two bowls alternating with player A of the opposing team this completes the first end ( PLAYER “A” HAS BEEN LEAD AND SKIP).
8.8.5.4 Player B from the team who won the first end now sends the jack and sends his two bowls first in the second
end alternating with player B from the opposing team then players A will bowl his four bowls alternating with player A of the opposing team, Then player B will bowl his two remaining bowls alternating with player B of the opposing team (Now both teams players “A” and “B” HAVE BEEN LEAD AND SKIP A END EACH.
8.8.5.5 This alternating pattern continues throughout the game.
8.8.5.6 Apart from the extra walking in Australian pairs the rules are the same as in normal pairs games.
9. CHANGES TO RULES
9.1 Any alteration or amendment to these Rules shall only be made at the AGM or a Special General Meeting convened for the
purpose.
9.2 Notice of any proposed changes must be notified to the General Secretary in accordance with paragraphs 6.3 and 6.5 of the
Constitution.
